Enjoying fresh shucked oysters at your favorite watering hole is always a great experience, but now it’s easier than ever to enjoy oysters at home with friends and family. Getting fresh oysters shipped to your door is surprisingly easy and affordable. Check out these helpful tips for ordering oysters online.
Find a Reputable Retailer
The first step to ordering oysters online is finding a reputable retailer. For example, our White Stone Oysters are harvested the same day they’re shipped. They’re packed with several frozen gel packs (more on this later) in a durable cooler and sent express to ensure freshness upon delivery.
There are dozens of online oyster retailers. We recommend looking at online reviews, their social media and even their blog before ordering. You can tell a lot about an oyster farm based on these things. Have a question? Send the oyster farm a message.
Unpack Upon Delivery
It’s important that you unpack your oysters as soon as possible. Typically, there will be a few frozen gel packs in the package. Make sure that they are frozen or still very cold. Next, pull your oysters out and open a couple to double check the quality. They should be alive, fresh, clean smelling and cool to the touch.
Next, put your oysters into your fridge or cooler for storage. If you’re keeping the oysters on ice, be careful. As the ice melts, the freshwater can begin to kill the oysters. Remember, live fresh oysters should glisten and have liquor in their shells.
Store Properly
We cover this in our FAQs as well, but it’s important that your oysters are stored correctly.
For the fridge: You want to be careful not to let your oysters dry out, so cover your oysters with a damp towel. If you’re storing oysters on ice, make sure they don’t sit in freshwater. Stored properly, your oysters should keep for up to 10 days.
Spotting a dead oyster is simple. If the bivalves are open, that is a clear indication they have perished. We recommend not eating dead oysters.
All White Stone Oysters shipments also come with a handy storage card in the box in case you forget.
Pick the Date
As you’re planning your delivery, pick a date that falls a day or before you’re intending to serve the oysters if you’re able. Not all oyster farms will let you pick your delivery date, but if you can, you should. Our website features a date picker that allows you to select your delivery date to ensure you’re able to get hands on your oysters as quickly as possible.
That’s it! Ordering fresh oysters online is incredibly simple. Enjoying delicious seafood at home has never been easier, so what are you waiting for?
